Woman in critical condition following gang rape in Gu Fi

January 1, 2017

A woman is in a critical condition following gang rape by soldiers in Gu Fi, Buthidaung.

The 18 year woman was abducted by soldiers from the village and taken to the nearby hills on Wednesday. Later a group of local men ventured to the area and found her in an unconscious state.

She later said the soldiers had taken turns raping her.

The woman was still bleeding when the report was filed on January 1.

Activists have long accused the Tatmadaw of using rape as a weapon of war against ethnic communities to demoralise them and destroy the fabric of their societies.

On the same day, soldiers fined Md Alam, 25, for erecting boundaries round his vegetable field.

The Tatmadaw maintains a heavy presence alongside the remote mountain ranges.
